Community-Based Psychedelic Organizations Key to Future Psychedelic Treatment Accessibility

Psychedelics have become a popular topic of discussion and research, with some states, including Oregon, going so far as to legalize psilocybin-assisted therapy, and the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies advancing MDMA-assisted therapy through the FDA as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. However, despite the progress made in learning more about these substances along with the benefits they possess and how they can be used as alternative treatments for various illnesses, the presence of large for-profit companies, which keep obtaining patents that make them the primary option for psychedelic therapies in the near future, keeps growing at a rather…

Trial Finds Psilocybin May Work as Effectively as Common Antidepressants

A clinical trial whose results were published last week has found that psilocybin may be used to treat depression. The phase 2 study was the first randomized trial that compared the effectiveness of commonly prescribed antidepressants with therapeutic doses of psilocybin. Its findings were reported in the “New England Journal of Medicine.” The trial was conducted by scientists from the Imperial College London. Despite the reported findings, there is still more that needs to be determined with regard to the use of psychedelics as a treatment for various mental health conditions, as researchers aren’t sure whether the substances, psilocybin included,…

Former Republican Governor Rick Perry is backing legislation tabled by State Rep. Alex Dominguez, which pushes for psychedelic therapy treatments for veterans living with PTSD. The bill calls for a clinical study on psilocybin, which is the active ingredient found in magic mushrooms, to be conducted. In an interview last week, Perry stated that the measure was an optimistic piece of legislation that legislators have the opportunity to discuss during this session. Research Finds Previous Use of Antidepressants May Reduce MDMA Effectiveness Against PTSD

A study conducted recently proposes that psychedelic-assisted therapy using MDMA to help treat PTSD is not as efficacious among individuals who have recently used psychiatric drugs commonly prescribed by doctors, known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. The research findings were reported in the “Psychopharmacology” journal. Allison Feduccia, director of education platform Psychedelic Support and author of the study, explained that antidepressants, in particular SSRIs and MDMA, bound themselves to the same receptors in an individual’s brain. She noted that if an individual used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and MDMA concurrently, the effects of the psychedelic would be decreased.  Feduccia added…

New Study Suggests That Psilocybin Could Boost Neuroplasticity

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark suggest that psilocybin, which is the main active ingredient found in magic mushrooms, may give rise to speedy and lasting antidepressant effects because it increases neuroplasticity in the brain. The study, which was reported in the “International Journal of Molecular Sciences,” has discovered evidence that psilocybin grows the number of neural connections in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of pig brains. Psilocybin has been shown to possess long-lasting and profound effects on mood and personality. However, the mechanisms behind these effects are still not clear. For their study, the scientists from Copenhagen…

First-of-a-Kind Study Identifies Benefits of Group Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Sessions

Psychedelics have become a popular topic of conversation, as well as of indulgence. While most of these substances remain outlawed in many countries across the globe, this has apparently not stopped people from accessing or using them. One of the reported common ways of consuming these drugs is in groups. Until recently, however, there hasn’t been any data to measure the possible value an individual derived from a group psychedelic experience. That has now changed. A new study that was published recently has found that using psychedelics within group settings (retreats or religious ceremonies, for example), could trigger increases in…

Microdosing on Psychedelic Drugs Linked to Broad Range of Effects

In recent years, microdosing has become popular as a wellness trend, both in the United States as well as overseas in countries such as Australia. Microdosing involves consuming a low dose of a psychedelic drug to reduce anxiety and stress or boost performance. While there have been some accounts by consumers who sing the praises of psychedelics, questions about how much of the reported benefits stem from the substances’ pharmacological effects rather than the partaker’s expectations and beliefs, and how microdosing works, still remain. To help answer some of these questions, we’ll look at a few studies on microdosing and…
