California Senator Refiles Measure to Legalize Psychedelics in 2023

Senator Scott Wiener of California has filed a measure to legalize the possession of a number of psychedelics. This comes after his office announced earlier this week that Wiener would be introducing the revised bill again in 2023. The revised bill will revoke state law that prohibits any mycelium or spores capable of producing mushrooms that contain psilocin or psilocybin. Psilocybin and psilocin are two of the major psychoactive components found in magic mushrooms. The ban on drug paraphernalia imposed on the substances mentioned in the state of California will also be repealed under the revised bill. During a phone…

Quebec Becomes First Province in Canada to Cover Psilocybin Therapy Costs

The province of Quebec recently became the first in Canada to cover expenses associated with psilocybin therapy. This comes as the use of psychedelics in mental health care gains popularity across Canada as well as neighboring countries such as the United States. Therapsil, a nonprofit healthcare advocacy focused on expanding legal, equitable and safe access to psilocybin-assisted therapy, was involved. The advocacy group confirmed that after getting permission from Health Canada, two doctors had succeeded in billing the province of Quebec for treatment using psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy, noting that the entire process had been legal. This marks a turning point in…

Study Suggests That Psilocybin Boosts Mindfulness

Over the past couple of years, Big Pharma and investors have poured millions of dollars into psychedelic research. Initial studies have found that psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin, mescaline and ketamine may offer significant mental health benefits. When paired with physiotherapy, these hallucinogenic drugs can deliver profound benefits against conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and eating disorders. Studies have indicated that psychedelics deliver these benefits by causing users to have profound changes in patients' beliefs about consciousness, meaning and purpose. A recently published study sought to understand the association between serotonin receptors, mystical-like experiences, mindfulness and psilocybin. Psilocybin…

Christmas As We Know It May Be Based On Psychedelic Traditions

We’ve all heard about Santa’s reindeer flying around the world as Santa drops off presents for kids who have been nice all year. Have you ever thought about how these animals fly though? If you guessed psychedelics, you may be right. Some historians argue that Father Christmas is a psychedelic mushroom shaman, as shown by his red-and-white suit, which bears resemblance to the psychedelic fly agaric mushroom. This mushroom, scientifically known as Amanita muscaria, is bright red with white flecks. Historical evidence on indigenous psychedelic shamanism in northern Europe and Siberia even suggests that the Christmas we know today is…

Three Theories Explaining Causes of Depression

Researchers have spent a significant amount of time trying to figure out the mechanisms that cause depression in an effort to develop preventative and treatment strategies for the mental condition. Over decades of intense research, three theories have emerged as the most plausible. The monoamine theory posits that the depletion of key hormones such as serotonin, norepinephrine and/or dopamine was instrumental in the development of antidepressants. This theory stated that a chemical imbalance in the brain and nervous system was to blame for the development of depression. More specifically, it said that a deficiency in monoamine transmitters was the primary…

Analysis Predicts Most States Will Have Legalized Psychedelics by 2037

A new analysis carried out by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis has projected that by 203, most states will have legalized psychedelics. After Denver became the first county to decriminalize the use of psilocybin in 2019, many other counties and even states have followed suit. For instance, the state of Oregon approved ballot measures that not only promoted research into psychedelics but also ended the substances’ criminalization and legalized their therapeutic use. In November, the state of Colorado legalized the possession of an extensive range of psychedelics after a ballot measure with this provision was approved by its…
