JAMA Article Suggests Psychedelics Industry Likely to Clash with FDA

Several states in the United States have already approved the use of psychedelics, even before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has concluded trials and drug approvals. For instance, the state of Oregon legalized the nontherapeutic use of psilocybin and established a program for supervised use following approval of Measure 109 by voters. Soon after this, voters in the state of Colorado approved Proposition 122, which will allow psychedelic businesses to launch come 2025. Other states planning to approve similar measures in 2024 include California, New York, Illinois, Vermont and Massachusetts. At the moment, the FDA is reviewing psychedelics…

California Campaigners Submit Final Text of 2024 Psychedelics Legalization Ballot Measure

The campaign behind a ballot measure in California to legalize psychedelic substances has presented a final amended resolution to officials in the state. Various changes have been made to the initiative following a public comment period that concluded in November. For instance, the changes expanded the types of businesses that could operate and also required that larger psychedelics businesses acquire peace agreements with labor unions. In addition, under the revised measure, adults would be permitted to legally use, possess and grow psychedelics such as LSD, psilocybin, DMT, MDMA, mescaline and ibogaine. However, one would require a recommendation from a physician…

Longevity Movement Looks to Tap Benefits of Psychedelics

America’s longevity movement, a growing community of people committed to reversing aging, is the latest group to take notice of psychedelics. A recent surge of psychedelic-related studies has revealed that hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD, ayahuasca and psilocybin (magic mushrooms) have the potential to treat several mental disorders. These initial studies have found that psychedelics can be especially effective when paired with traditional talk therapy, offering long-term relief against hard-to-treat conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders and treatment-resistant depression, with few side effects and at minimal doses. The findings have been so promising that researchers and mental-health experts…

AMA Study Shows Safety, Efficacy of Psilocybin in Treating Bipolar Depression

A new clinical study from the American Medical Association (AMA) has indicated that psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy may be safe and effective in the treatment of bipolar II disorder depressive episodes. The nonrandomized controlled study was conducted at Baltimore’s Sheppard Pratt Hospital and involved 15 patients diagnosed with treatment-resistant BDII depression with lengthy depressive episodes. After receiving a single psilocybin dose followed by seven psychotherapy sessions, researchers say study participants “displayed strong and persistent antidepressant effects” with no increase in mood instability of suicidality. Patients with bipolar II disorder (BDII) received a 25-milligram dose of psilocybin and had seven sessions with therapists…

Researchers Explore Whether Ayahuasca Ceremonies Could Reduce Narcissistic Behavior

A study published in the “Journal of Personality Disorders” has suggested that participation in ayahuasca rituals may reduce narcissistic behavior. The research explored the connection between ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew with a rich history of spiritual, healing and religious use in indigenous Amazonian communities, and narcissistic behavior. Ayahuasca is typically brewed from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and the leaves of plants containing dimethyltryptamine (DMT) such as Psychotria viridis. The brew triggers a potent hallucinogenic experience once ingested and is usually consumed in ritualistic ceremonies under the guidance of experienced shamans. A typical guided ayahuasca ceremony is meant to put participants…

Psilocybin, LSD Could Be Better Than Opioids in Pain Management

A recent review of scientific psychedelic research has suggested that hallucinogens such as psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and LSD may be more effective at managing pain compared to opioids. The review indicates that classic psychedelics may be effective at mitigating the physical agony caused by pain disorders such as fibromyalgia and injuries. Furthermore, the review noted that the efficacy of these substances can increase over time because they can simultaneously help patients deal with symptoms of mental anguish as well, essentially killing two birds with one stone in a way traditional pain medications such as opioids never could. The past couple…

Psilocybin Reduces Distress in Those Who Suffered Childhood Trauma

A Canadian study published in the “Journal of Psychoactive Drugs” has revealed that psilocybin, the main hallucinogenic agent in magic mushrooms, may reduce psychological distress in individuals with childhood trauma. The researchers found a possible association between magic mushroom use and declines in psychological distress, especially among people with adverse childhood experiences (ACE) after exploring the relationship between psychological distress and psilocybin use. Like several other classic psychedelics, psilocybin has been subject to increased attention in recent years, thanks to anecdotal and scientific claims of its medical efficacy. Previous research efforts have found that psilocybin may be effective at treating…

Why Psychedelics Yield Meaningful Experiences

Psychedelics have been subject to intense public and scientific scrutiny in recent years, thanks to claims of their medical efficacy. Countless studies have now found that psychedelics can induce profound mental changes in patients with hard-to-treat mental disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder, putting psychedelics such as MDMA, LSD and psilocybin on track to becoming approved mental-health treatments. However, long before scientists began running psychedelic clinical trials, regular and even casual psychedelics users knew one thing about this curious class of drugs: psychedelics could induce meaningful and often life-changing experiences in people who took them…

Psilocybin Clinics Swamped as Out-of-State Patients Flock to Oregon

In 2020, the state of Oregon became the first in the country to legalize psilocybin mushrooms for mental-health treatment through a voter-approved initiative. In January 2023, the state became the first in the country to legalize adult=use psilocybin. In June, Oregon launched its first licensed psilocybin services center. Since then, 17 other licensed centers have launched, with the number of out-of-state visitors recorded thus far being significantly greater than patients from Oregon. Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic that is produced by more than 200 mushroom species. Numerous studies have shown that this psychedelic compound holds the potential to treat…

Massachusetts Governor Proposes Bill to Explore Psychedelics Treatments for Veterans

Earlier this month, the governor of Massachusetts filed a measure that would modernize services, increase benefits and promote inclusivity for veterans in the state. Governor Maura Healey filed the resolution, christened the Hero Act, on Veterans Day. The measure would establish a private-public working group to conduct research on the health benefits of psychedelic substances as treatments for veterans suffering from mental health or physical disorders related to their service. It would also expand behavioral-health treatment and provide IVF reimbursement for service members in the LGBTQ community. This isn’t the first psychedelic-focused measure to be introduced in the state, which…
