Ayahuasca May Have Facilitated Kids’ Rescue in the Amazon

A group of four children that recently went missing in the Amazon forest after a plane crash may owe their rescue to ayahuasca. Some people believe ayahuasca played a role in an almost-divine act of intervention that saw the indigenous volunteers and Colombian army scour the expansive rainforest in a race against time to save the missing children. Ayahuasca is a plant-based psychedelic brew made from hallucinogenic ingredients such as N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Originating and primarily consumed in Southern America, ayahuasca is said to have neuroprotective, memory-boosting, anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies have also found that the psychedelic can increase mindfulness,…

Psychedelics Unlock Pivotal Learning Windows, Study Finds

A recent psychedelic study has indicated that hallucinogens such as psilocybin may be able to unlock the critical “learning period” when mammals are more susceptible to their outside environment. This is a period of brain development when mammals can engage with their surroundings in a way that drives brain development and allows them to absorb the lessons they need to survive swiftly. It allows mammals to quickly learn skills that are essential for their survival, such as speech in humans and singing in birds. Finding ways to reopen this period could make it possible and a lot easier for humans…

Denver Psychedelics Conference Draws National Attention

Recent advancements in psychedelic research have placed hallucinogenic drugs at the forefront of mental health treatment research. After researchers spent decades trying to find safer and more effective treatments for mental disorders, psychedelics emerged as a safe and viable treatment for mental ailments. Studies have found that hallucinogens, including psilocybin, MDMA, and ketamine, can treat conditions such as depression and PTSD with minimal side effects. This influx of psychedelic research has brought psychedelics to the forefront of mainstream media and driven a flurry of legislative action in several regions in the country. The upcoming Psychedelic Science conference in Denver will…

NIDA to Fund Studies on Impact of Psychedelics Legalization in Cities, States

Last week, a federal health agency requested that studies into the influence of evolving laws on psychedelics in states and cities across the country be conducted. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) issued a notice talking about how the psychedelic reform movement had spread and discussing the different approaches used by various jurisdictions, which included decriminalized, reduced penalties and legalization. The notice of special interest also highlighted the historic win recorded in Oregon a little more than two years ago when voters in the state legalized psilocybin services. The state of Colorado followed suit soon after, establishing healing centers…

Study Shows Trip-Free Psilocybin’s Anti-OCD Effects

Psilocybin is one of several psychedelics that have exhibited therapeutic potential against various common mental disorders. Research has revealed that psilocybin (magic mushrooms) can deliver long-term benefits against mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance-abuse disorders. However, psilocybin-assisted therapy usually involves undergoing a psychedelic trip that can last up to six hours. Given that many people would prefer psychedelic treatments without the hours long trip, researchers have been working to develop psychedelic drugs that allow patients to derive the benefits without having to experience hallucinogenic effects for hours. In a recent study on the effects of trip-free psychedelics, researchers…

Study Suggests Psychedelics Trigger Psychological Strengths in Users

A recent influx in psychedelic research has revealed that hallucinogenic drugs have the potential to treat a wide variety of mental health disorders. Even though most jurisdictions still outlaw the production and sale of psychedelics, looser psychedelic laws have made it possible for researchers to study the potential benefits and risks of psychedelic use. This research has shown that psychedelics such as psilocybin, MDMA and LSD can offer long-term relief against various mental disorders with minimal side effects. As most psychedelic research is still in its infancy, researchers across the country are working to fully understand the effects of psychedelics…

New Study Shows How Psilocybin Can Help Treat Alcohol Use Disorders

Previous research has discovered that psilocybin can effectively treat substance-use disorders. Now, a new study has provided new insights into how psilocybin-assisted therapy works for individuals who are addicted to alcohol. For their study, scientists at UC San Francisco, NYU and Fluence explored the therapeutic mechanisms that led to a considerable reduction in negative drinking behavior among 13 participants suffering from alcohol use disorders. Fluence is an education platform that specializes in the training and certification of psychedelic mental health therapists. Before the trial, each participant reported on their relationship with alcohol. The majority of participants admitted to having used…

Study Shows Increase in Use of Non-LSD Psychedelics by Young Adults

A combined study by the University of Colombia and Michigan has revealed an increase in non-LSD psychedelic use by young adult Americans. The poll found that the number of young adults aged 19–30 who use psychedelics other than LSD in the past 12 months doubled from 2018 to 2021. The study indicated that 3.4% of young adults had used non-LSD psychedelics in 2018 while 6.6% of adults in the same age group had used non-LSD hallucinogens in the past 12 months. Megan Patrick, a research professor from the Survey Research Center at U-M’s Institute for Social Research, coprincipal investigator of…

Psychedelic Cryptography Contest Winners Announced

The Psychedelic Cryptography (PsyCrypto) contest announced the winners of the psychedelic-themed derby and awarded cash prizes last week. Contestants had to create videos and encode the vidoes with hidden messages that could be decrypted by people who had taken psychedelics such as magic mushrooms (psilocybin), ayahuasca and LSD. The contest was run by a nonprofit group called Qualia Research Institute (QRI) with the aim of showing the “specific information-processing advantages” of taking psychedelics. VFX artist Raimonds Jermaks took first and second place in the video category for the videos “Can You See Us?” and “We are here. Let’s talk,” while…

Nevada Legislators Approve Bill Creating Working Group on Psychedelics

Lawmakers in Nevada have approved a bill that would create a psychedelic working group to study hallucinogenics and aid in the development of a therapeutic psychedelic market in the state. Recent efforts by scientists across the country have shown that psychedelics, long considered by federal law as controlled drugs with zero medical application, may be able to alleviate a wide variety of mental health disorders. Researchers have found that when paired with talk therapy, even a single dose of a psychedelic such as psilocybin can offer patients sustained and long-term relief against the symptoms of conditions such as treatment-resistant depression…
