Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy May Soon Gain Accreditation Standards

As the prevalence of mental health conditions increases, so does interest in new treatments for these disorders. One particular area of interest is psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, which involves the supervised administration of psychedelic drugs, such as psilocybin and ketamine, in conjunction with therapy. Psychedelics have been used for centuries by Indigenous communities for their spiritual and religious ceremonies. These substances are known to alter an individual’s mood and perception as well as their cognitive processes. This means these treatments possess the potential to make cognitive behavioral therapy and other talk therapies more effective. Given these effects, patients are bound to be…

The Case for Decriminalizing Psychedelics Nationally

Interest in psychedelics has increased these last few years, mainly as a result of numerous studies that have found that the substances possess a range of medical benefits. The decriminalization of psychedelics is also said to benefit society at large, with improvements being seen in public health and wellness. This is backed by findings from a survey done in Portugal, which found a drop in drug-related adverse outcomes and no reported rise in drug use. Portugal decriminalized the private and public use, possession and acquisition of all drugs in 2000 in an effort to reorient policy towards a health-led approach.…

New Book Explores Religious Interest in Psychedelics

The psychedelic renaissance is here, with numerous studies showing that psychedelics, including LSD, psilocybin, MDMA and ketamine. may be useful in the treatment of mental health conditions, such as addiction, depression, anxiety and psychological distress. Veteran religion journalist Don Lattin recently wrote a book describing how these drugs may prompt a spiritual awakening. In his latest book, “God on Psychedelics,” Lattin looks into how various religious groups are encouraging experiences of human unity and interconnectedness through the substances. He starts by discussing entheogens, which refer to psychoactive drugs that are consumed for spiritual or religious purposes. Lattin talks about priests,…

Research Finds That People Used Psychedelics in Bronze Age

A new study has found that ancestors in the Bronze Age frequently indulged in psychedelics. The Bronze Age is a historic period that lasted between 3300 BC–1200 BC. This period got its name from the use of bronze, marking the maiden time people started working with metal. The study found that humans living on Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea that belong to Spain, regularly consumed mind-altering substances extracted from plants. Researchers confirmed this by analyzing hair samples retrieved from a burial site thought to be from the Bronze Age. Their discovery represents the first confirmed…

Connecticut Legislators Pass Bill Decriminalizing Psilocybin

A Connecticut legislative committee recently approved a measure to decriminalize possessing small amounts of magic mushrooms. The legislation reclassifies the possession of up to half an ounce of psilocybin mushrooms as a civil infraction with a $150 fine. Repeat offenders would be charged higher fines ranging from $200 to $500, and those who were convicted three times for psilocybin possession would be directed to a drug-education program. Joint Committee on Judiciary cochair Representative Steven Stafstrom said that although the measure does not legalize psilocybin outright or allow for therapeutic and recreational use, the legislation acknowledges the fact that psilocybin possession…
