Nevada Legislators File Psilocybin, MDMA Legalization Measure

Legislators in the state of Nevada have introduced a measure to legalize psilocybin and promote studies into the psychedelic while also encouraging research on MDMA. The measure, introduced by Senator Rochelle Nguyen, is mainly designed to streamline the process of conducting research on MDMA and psilocybin. It also contains language eliminating civil and criminal penalties for adults who grow, possess or share up to four ounces of psilocybin. Under the legislation, scientists would submit applications to research psychedelics to the state Department of Health and Human Services. The research part of the measure also offers legal protections against prosecution at…

Reducing Trip Duration Crucial to Mass Adoption of Psychedelic Therapies

A growing body of scientific literature has revealed that psychedelics have the potential to treat a variety of mental disorders. Drugs such as ketamine, ecstasy (MDMA) and psilocybin have shown in clinical studies that they are capable of treating psychiatric disorders, including treatment-resistant depression, eating disorders, anxiety and substance-use disorder. As a result, major investors have increasingly turned their eyes to the nascent psychedelic sector and directed hundreds of millions of dollars toward the research and development of psychedelic-assisted therapies. One of the biggest draws of psychedelic-assisted treatments is that they kick in relatively quickly and provide long-term mental health…

Psychedelics Could Transform the Couples Therapy Field

Psychedelics have emerged as a viable alternative to traditional mental health therapies in recent years. A surge in psychedelic research has revealed that hallucinogenic drugs such as ketamine, MDMA, LSD and psilocybin (magic mushrooms) are capable of treating numerous mental health disorders. Studies have shown that these psychedelics can deliver potent and long-term mental health benefits when paired with talk therapy and at relatively minimal doses. While most of this research is still in its infancy, results from prior studies have been so compelling that lawmakers across the United States are working on legislation to either decriminalize psychedelics or sanction…

Scientists Explore Microbiome’s Role in Medicinal Effects of Psychedelics

A microbiome is a group of up to 1,000 microbial and bacterial species that live within your body and play a major role in a variety of functions. Most of the microorganisms in the microbiome are symbiotic and have mutually beneficial relationships with their host. In recent years, increased research into the human microbiome has indicated that it plays a critical role in maintaining both physical and mental health. As the field of psychedelic research picks up speed amid a surge of investment into hallucinogenic drug research, more scientists are considering the association between psychedelics and the human microbiome. Several…

Oklahoma House Passes Bill Promoting Psychedelics Research, Patient Protection

America’s nascent psychedelic industry scored a significant win after House legislators in Oklahoma voted in favor of a measure that would promote psilocybin research and protect patients from prosecution. Introduced by Representative Daniel Pae, the legislation passed through committee nearly a month ago before being cleared by the House of Representatives in a 66-to-32 vote. The legislation is now headed to the Senate floor. If it is signed into law, the psilocybin bill will protect patients who undertake psilocybin-assisted therapy from legal repercussions while promoting research into the medical potential of psilocybin. In mid-February, the Oklahoma House Alcohol, Tobacco and…

Senators File Revised Bill Seeking to Reschedule Breakthrough Psychedelic Therapies

A group of bicameral and bipartisan lawmakers has filed a revised bill that would reschedule psychedelics as breakthrough therapies and promote psychedelic research and drug development. Filed by Senators Rand Paul and Cory Booker alongside Representatives Nance Mae and Madeleine Dean, the Breakthrough Therapies Act seeks to streamline the federal process of rescheduling “breakthrough therapies” such as MDMA and psilocybin that have exhibited significant medical potential. Thanks to a surge in psychedelic research in recent years, scientists have discovered that psychedelics have the potential to treat mental health disorders such as major depressive syndrome, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. The…

How Psychedelics Could Benefit Mental Health of Women

Over the past couple of years, loosening psychedelic policies worldwide have led to a significant surge in psychedelic research. The result threatens to revolutionalize the psychiatric industry completely. Research and clinical studies have revealed that psychedelics such as psilocybin, ketamine and MDMA have the potential to treat a variety of mental health disorders at relatively little doses and with minimal side effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has already approved the use of ketamine-assisted therapies to alleviate treatment-resistant depression in adults, and other psychedelics have exhibited significant potential in clinical studies. With proper investment and support from lawmakers, the…

Now Could Be Good Time for Investors to Add Psychedelic Stocks to Portfolios

Psychedelics have been enjoying increased media attention in recent years due to their therapeutic potential. Research and clinical studies on the applications of hallucinogenic drugs has revealed that they are capable of treating the symptoms of mental health conditions such as major depressive disorder, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Amid this influx of scientific literature, lawmakers in several state and local governments have been working on measures to legalize psychedelic use for medical purposes. Like America’s state-legal marijuana sector, psychedelics are going through a renaissance that has allowed the substances to slowly emerge from prohibition as a potential treatment for…

Is Now the Time for Insurers, Employers to Cover Psychedelic Treatments?

A recent surge in psychedelic research has revealed that psychedelics appear capable of treating mental health conditions such as treatment-resistant depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Although much of this research is still in its infancy, it is definitive enough that lawmakers in several states, cities and local governments are considering legalizing psychedelic treatments. Oregon passed a measure allowing psychedelics for mental health treatments last year, and several cities, including Arcata, Ann Arbor, Denver and Detroit have passed legislation to decriminalize psychedelics.  As more states and cities consider decriminalizing psychedelics, insurers and employers may have to start covering psychedelic treatments. Dr.…

Ferndale Becomes Fourth Michigan City to Decriminalize Entheogens

The city of Ferndale has joined a small but growing number of cities in Michigan that have decriminalized entheogenic plants such as DMT, psilocybin mushrooms and ayahuasca. The Ferndale City Council announced last week that a motion to decriminalize entheogens had received unanimous approval. While the resolution doesn’t legalize entheogens outright, it will make the prosecution of entheogen-related offenses a low priority for law enforcement. The resolution comes amid a surge in psychedelic research which revealed that hallucinogenics such as ayahuasca and magic mushrooms have potential mental health benefits. According to the resolution, clinical and scientific studies coupled with traditional…
