How Psychedelics Could Enable Soldiers Beat Trauma

Data from Veterans Affairs estimates that more than 120,000 veterans in the United States have died by suicide. Many more in America and other parts of the globe struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder as conflicts rear their heads globally. In Ukraine, the ministry of health estimates that close to four million individuals are living with post-traumatic stress disorder. To help manage this, many have turned to psychedelics, and for good reason. Last month, the country’s special parliamentary commission voted to set up a working group that would investigate the effectiveness of MDMA-assisted therapy on post-traumatic stress disorder. In a statement,…

Reintroduced NJ Bill Seeks to Legalize Psilocybin

The state of New Jersey may soon legalize the recreational and therapeutic use of psilocybin mushrooms, following the reintroduction of a measure that was withdrawn in 2023 for revision. The measure, called the Psilocybin Behavioral Health Access and Services Act, concentrates on mental health. Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in hallucinogenic mushrooms. According to research, this compound is metabolized in the body to psilocyn and can penetrate the central nervous system. The measure was tabled at the state Senate again last week and has strong support, particularly from Senate President Nick Scutari, who originally sponsored the recreational…

Exploring How Psilocybin Affects Self-Perception

Researchers from Montclair State University recently dived into multitudes of social media posts to try and understand how psilocybin, the main psychedelic element within magic mushrooms, affects an individual’s self-perception. Published in the “Journal of Psychedelic Studies,” the recent study sought to understand how psychedelics, specifically psilocybin, affect self-perception and self-recognition. Psychedelics such as psilocybin have attracted considerable attention in recent years, thanks to a growing body of scientific studies and anecdotal reports of their efficacy against a myriad of mental conditions.  Scientific literature on psychedelics states that they can treat the symptoms of debilitating mental disorders, including post-traumatic stress…

An Analysis of Recent FDA Warnings About Compounded Ketamine

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued two warnings regarding compounded ketamine use on Feb. 16, 2022, and a year and a half later on Oct. 10, 2023. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that is typically used to induce loss of consciousness and treat pain in both humans and animals. It has some hallucinogenic properties and is often called a dissociative anesthetic hallucinogen because it can make patients and recreational users feel detached from physical pain and the environment. Ketamine can also induce amnesia, a sense of sedation and immobility, making it the drug of choice for bad actors…

DEA Renews Efforts to Ban Psychedelics Despite Backlash in 2022

Last week, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) suggested that DOC and DOI be classified under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act in its latest notice. DOC (2,5-dimethoxy-4-chloroamphetamine) and DOI (2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine) are both psychedelic drugs of the amphetamine and phenethylamine chemical classes. In its latest notice, the DEA stated that the medical and scientific basis for suggesting the ban was that these hallucinogens had no known medical value and a high potential for abuse. This is despite the fact that the agency possesses no evidence demonstrating a high abuse potential or directly linking the compounds to severe health events. In…

Longevity Movement Looks to Tap Benefits of Psychedelics

America’s longevity movement, a growing community of people committed to reversing aging, is the latest group to take notice of psychedelics. A recent surge of psychedelic-related studies has revealed that hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD, ayahuasca and psilocybin (magic mushrooms) have the potential to treat several mental disorders. These initial studies have found that psychedelics can be especially effective when paired with traditional talk therapy, offering long-term relief against hard-to-treat conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders and treatment-resistant depression, with few side effects and at minimal doses. The findings have been so promising that researchers and mental-health experts…

Four Ways to Boost the Nascent Psychedelics Industry

It is estimated that at least 57 million individuals in America have a mental-health condition. Of this number, roughly 14 million suffer from serious mental issues. Despite these huge numbers, conventional treatments aren’t effective for a significant number of patients, which has prompted many to seek alternative treatments. Psychedelic therapy is one of the popular alternatives as numerous studies have shown that psychedelics could relieve mental health conditions like such as depression, anxiety, substance use disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. For instance, trials conducted by MAPS have demonstrated effectiveness in the use of MDMA in managing post-traumatic stress disorder. The…

VR Widens Possibilities for Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Recent advancements in virtual technology may have applications in psychedelic-assisted therapy. Both are relatively new fields that have attracted lots of attention in recent years thanks to their potentially game-changing applications. Psychedelic-assisted therapy has shown it has the potential to offer long-term relief against a variety of mental-health disorders with few if any side effects. Researchers have found that virtual technology may enhance psychedelic-assisted therapy by simulating the visual phenomenology of psychedelic states. With both fields in their infancy, scientists are focusing their efforts on using virtual reality (VR) as a companion to psychedelic-assisted therapy or a potential nondrug alternative.…

Study Finds Psilocybin Users Less Inclined to Work Overtime

“Quiet quitting” is a phenomenon where employees put in the minimum effort, time and enthusiasm required of them at their jobs and don’t go out of their way to create any extra value for their employers. The trend has picked up a lot of steam in recent years as employees have begun prioritizing a strict work-life balance and finding value in their hobbies and other experiences rather than work. Increased employee demands and stagnating wages coupled with increasing living costs have made many employees question if going the extra mile, whether it's through arriving early, taking part in nonmandatory meetings…

Study Finds Psychedelic Users Lower Cocaine, Alcohol Intake

Recent research published in the “International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction” has indicated that psychedelic use may result in reduced cocaine intake. The study found that while psychedelic users reported either reducing or completely stopping their intake of cocaine, antidepressants and alcohol, their use of tobacco and cannabis products went up. As psychedelics have been illegal at the state and federal levels for the past several decades, their use has been limited to a small niche community of psychonauts. However, a recent surge in psychedelic research revealed that hallucinogens have the potential to treat a myriad of mental-health disorders…
