Fireside Project Set to Launch Peer Support Line for Psychedelic Users

The Fireside Project is set to launch the first psychedelics peer support hotline in the world. Its creator, Joshua White, revealed that the concept behind the support line was to offer support to people who are experiencing an intense psychedelic trip or those who want to process an intense psychoactive experience they’ve gone through.

White stated that the idea came to him last year, a few months into the coronavirus pandemic. He explained that the dark series of events that occurred during the summer, coupled with San Francisco’s infamous orange sky, led him to the realization that tied mental health and psychedelic substances together.

The support line is scheduled for launch on April 14 and will be available to any and all callers, be it a seasoned psychedelic consumer seeking companionship on their journey or an individual who ingested more edibles than they should have.

White revealed that his passion for psychedelic substances began more than a decade ago. He mentioned that he had for some time considered professionally transitioning from being a lawyer to a psychologist focused on psychedelic therapy. Additionally, he has spent many hours volunteering at the TALK Line in San Francisco as well as with operations that offer onsite peer support for people undergoing psychedelic experiences, such as the Zendo Project.

The TALK Line is a service offered by Safe & Sound, a nonprofit organization that provides compassionate support using phone lines to caregivers and parents of children located within the San Francisco Bay Area.

White explained that the aim of TALK Line was to help put an end to child abuse. He noted that besides responding to parents’ calls, the service provided its callers with follow-up phone calls. This, he said, allowed them to develop long-term relationships with individuals.

He noted that before texting or calling the peer support hotline, there are some things a caller needs to know. First, he mentions the definition of the word “psychedelics,” which can be vague and confusing as it refers to several things, such as caffeine and ecstasy.

White also asserted that marijuana consumers would be welcome to call the Fireside support line.

However, people who are curious about ingesting psychedelics will not be allowed to use the service for legal reasons. The company’s services will include in-app chat support, a test service and a phone line. Conversely, individuals who offer psychedelic support themselves are welcome to use Fireside’s services if they’d like to decompress or talk about work.
