Congressman Says Psychedelics Are a Promising Treatment for PTSD

It is rare to hear anyone on Capitol Hill talking about psychedelics, but Rep. Joe Kennedy III, a Democrat from Massachusetts, has not only changed his stance from being anti-marijuana legalization lawmaker to one in favor of cannabis policy reform and he even said that certain psychedelics show a lot of promise as treatments for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (“PTSD”). This statement by the Congressman is interesting for a number of reasons. First, Democrats in the House of Representatives heavily voted against an amendment which would have paved the way for research into a number of psychedelics, such as…

The Role of Psychedelic Products in Medicinal Treatments

Scientists are embarking on a new frontier in medicinal treatment. The successful use of controlled psychedelic products is becoming widely accepted by universities, government and research institutes and health care organizations to treat a variety of mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. In the last decade, breakthrough findings have been published about the usefulness and application of psychedelic compounds like psilocybin, more commonly referred to as magic mushrooms. Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic prodrug compound, which is produced by more than 200 species of mushrooms. After obtaining U.S. regulatory approval to research psychedelics in healthy volunteers, Johns Hopkins…

What is in Your Ayahuasca Brew?

The Amazonian vine ayahuasca has exerted its healing influence far beyond the religious and traditional ceremonies of South America as evidenced by the exploding interest in the plant across the world. However, the complicated legal status of this plant, together with its attractive economic potential, has opened the door for some less than honest practices when preparing the drink, especially regarding the ingredients that go into the cup. According to research (yet to be published) by Helle Kaasik, from the University of Tartu in Estonia and a team from the University of Campinas in Brazil, there is a marked variation…

Book Reveals How LSD Helped the Author Deal with Mental Illness

A Really Good Day, a memoir authored by Ayelet Waldman, is causing quite a stir from the time it was published back in 2017. In this book, the author shares her personal experience of how she micro-dosed on LSD in order to improve her mental health and also save her marriage that was on the verge of falling apart. Micro-dosing involves taking one-tenth of the amount of LSD that recreational users take in order to “trip.” These micro-doses are taken at an interval of four days. The internet is awash with anecdotal reports of how people have benefitted from taking…

Oregon Officials Outline How Legal Psilocybin and Decriminalized Cannabis Would Affect the State

Taking advantage of a rarely used provision in the laws of Oregon, lawmakers asked the state to provide several analyses showing how the legalization of psilocybin therapy and the decriminalization of marijuana would affect the state. The Oregon Criminal Justice Commission revealed that the decriminalization initiative would result in the reduction of misdemeanor and felony convictions in the state by 91%. This reduction, the officials say, would be substantial in all racial groups. For example, the reduction would be 94% for blacks and Native Americans living in the state, while misdemeanor and felony convictions would reduce by about 82.9% in…

Canada Grants Terminally Ill Patients Permission to Use Magic Mushrooms

The Canadian Health Minister has granted a group of four terminally ill cancer patients exemptions to possess and use magic (psilocybin) mushrooms as part of their end-of-life care. This is a landmark decision since it means that these four people will be the first to legally possess and use psilocybin mushrooms since psychedelics were prohibited decades ago. The patients, through a nonprofit called Therapsil, had submitted their petition to the minister way back in April so that they could be exempted from the country’s laws which bar anyone from possessing and using magic mushrooms. This petition was quickly followed by…

Psychedelic Decriminalization Measure Gets Official Nod for DC Ballot

An initiative that would in effect decriminalize several psychedelic substances in the nation’s capitol has officially been cleared for inclusion on the November ballot. The official announcement that the advocates had met all the requirements was made on Wednesday when the Board of Elections had a virtual meeting. Last month, Decriminalize Nature D.C. submitted the voter signatures they had collected during an exercise that was made even more difficult by the COVID-19 outbreak and the resultant social distancing regulations intended to contain the virus. The unique challenges of this campaign prompted advocates from around the country to fly to the…

How Israel is Taking the Lead in Medical Psychedelics

This may be surprising news, but Israel is quietly taking the lead in the world of conducting research on and using psychedelics for medical purposes. When you think about it, it is only natural that the state of Israel picks a lot of interest in psychedelics. For starters, more than one in ten Israelis suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. That is a large proportion of the population and the government is keen to find ways to alleviate the symptoms of these people. Furthermore, military service is compulsory and conflicts between Israel and some of its neighbors break out on a…
