Former Texas Governor Promotes Research on Psychedelics for Veterans

Recently, the former governor of the state of Texas, Rick Perry, joined reform advocates and leading scientists at the Strength in Numbers gala. The event, which was centered on promoting studies on the therapeutic potential of substances such as MDMA and psilocybin for veterans, was hosted by Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions. Earlier this year, Perry also advocated for a measure to study the medical use of psychedelic substances for veterans.

During his remarks at the gala, Perry revealed that various experiences prompted him to look beyond the state for assistance, including one where he met a young military veteran with PTSD who had found it hard to access sufficient healthcare through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Perry discussed what it would take to get the government to consider the therapeutic use of psychedelic substances for vulnerable communities, noting that government officials would start by pressuring the Department of Veterans Affairs in order to have these compounds made available for the treatment of various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

In addition, Perry stated that staying focused would help win this battle, noting that while he understood that there was some queasiness about the psychedelic industry’s capitalization, it would be hard to grow the expansive treatment structure needed without the involvement of capitalism. Furthermore, he emphasized on the importance of having companies invest in the industry, having trained therapists and destigmatizing the use of these substances.

An official with the VA department noted that department officials were closely following research on these substances.

Rick Doblin, the founder of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelics Studies, also attended the event. The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelics Studies has spearheaded research on psychedelic substances, including its current FDA-approved clinical trials on the use of MDMA as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Earlier in May, the FDA cleared the organization to expand its research by administering the psychedelic to volunteer therapists who have been trained to treat individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Tim Ferriss, who’s a philanthropist as well as an author, was also in attendance. Ferriss has financed different psychedelics research initiatives in the country. Currently he’s helping fund a psychedelics policy center at Harvard Law School through his Saisei Foundation. The objective of the policy center, called the Project on Psychedelics Law and Regulation, is to help physicians navigate the growing medical space and inform legislation as reforms continue advancing.

Such policy studies take on a bigger significance given the advances of industry actors such as Delic Holdings Inc. (CSE: DELC) (OTCQB: DELCF) as they focus on developing various treatments from these substances, many of which are unfortunately still classified in Schedule 1 of the CSA.
