Could Psychedelics Breathe New Life into Environmental Conservation?

There is a flurry of activity within the scientific community as different groups try to investigate different attributes and potential uses of psychedelics. However, one particular angle that is eye-catching is the study of the link between consuming psychedelics and the impact on environmental conservation.

Some researchers have discovered that when study participants are taken to a natural setting and are given psychedelics, the participants report a stronger and deepened sense of oneness with nature. This conclusion was arrived at after crunching the numbers from the feedback provided by no less than 600 study participants who seemed to agree that the boundaries between them and nature dissolved, at least temporarily, when they took psychedelic drugs in a natural setting. These effects persisted for as long as six months.

The researchers say that this sense of oneness triggers a desire in individuals to care for the natural world, and by extension, reduce the activities which are detrimental to nature. How could this be?

The research participants report that they experience self-transcendence, a situation in which the boundaries between an individual and other people, as well as with nature itself, dissolve and leave an all-encompassing “oneness” or “oceanic boundlessness.”

The study authors say that such feelings of oceanic boundlessness can motivate the individual to do more to conserve nature. This change is important particularly because environmental groups have for long decried the inertia or even despondency among lots of people who are aware of the harms being done to the environment and yet those people feel that they helpless and cannot do anything about what is happening. A dose of psychedelics administered in a natural setting may be all they need to be galvanized into action, according to the researchers.

However, the authors are quick to add that there is no magic pill (whether psychedelic or otherwise) to cause widespread reversals in the environmentally-damaging habits of modern life. Workable solutions can only come from systemic changes in the way society operates rather than from the changes made at individual level, as would happen through the sense of oneness triggered by consuming psychedelics in a natural setting.

Nevertheless, giving consideration to the mental, social, psychological and even environmental applications of psychedelics is an eye-opener about the immense possibilities inherent in the plants and natural substances around us. It is an exciting field of possibilities that lots of companies, such as Field Trip Psychedelics Inc., are willing to bet a lot of their resources on now and in the coming years. Who knows what they could unearth? We can only wait!
