Activists in Michigan Start Signature Collection Efforts for Psychedelic Legalization Ballot Measure

Earlier this week, activists in the state of Michigan began a signature drive to collect signatures to place an initiative to legalize the sharing, possession and cultivation of psychedelics on the coming statewide ballot.

Students for Sensible Drug Policy, a youth-led organization, and the Decriminalize Nature chapter in Michigan are collaborating in this effort. The measure would establish a system for the spiritual and therapeutic use of psychedelic substances.

The legislation also permits counseling, spiritual, harm reduction, therapeutic, guidance, supervision and associated supportive services.

The initiative also authorizes entities that have acquired a certificate of need from the state’s Department of Health and Human Services and those designated by a psychiatric hospital to grow and sell psychedelics to individuals who possess written recommendations from their physicians.

In addition to legalizing these substances, the legislation also proposes amendments to drug statutes that would decrease criminal penalties for the possession of any controlled substances categorized under Schedule I/II. The ballot measure would also protect individuals from being prosecuted for small amounts of drugs.

Kat Ebert, a board member of the Students for Sensible Drug Policy, stated that this measure was an opportunity for individuals in the state to make history by approving a policy that was centered around compassion. For the initiative to qualify for this year’s ballot, activists are required to collect no less than 340,050 signatures from registered voters by the start of June.

Decriminalize Nature board member Moudou Baqui stated that the measure’s certification was another step to putting an end to the unjust mechanisms of oppression and mass incarceration.

Reform is also advancing at the local level in the state, with the City Council of Hazel Park passing a measure to decriminalize entheogenic substances, including ibogaine and psilocybin.

Last year, the City Council of Ann Arbor also made the enforcement of prohibition laws on psychedelics, including DMT, ayahuasca and psilocybin, among the lowest enforcement priorities for the city. Local legislators soon followed this decision with a declaration that September be made Entheogenic Plants and Fungi Awareness Month.

Additionally, voters in the city of Detroit also passed a ballot measure to decriminalize psychedelic substances. The City Council of Grand Rapids also passed a measure supporting the decriminalization of various psychedelic substances. However, this resolution didn’t meet activists’ expectations as it merely expressed support for future reform but didn’t amend any enforcement practices in the city.

As more jurisdictions reform their psychedelics policies, we are likely to see more companies such as Delic Holdings Corp. (CSE: DELC) (OTCQB: DELCF) setting up shop and offering a variety of options in the therapeutic application of psychedelic compounds.
