Members of Decriminalize Nature Colorado Springs gave a proposal presentation last Tuesday during a city council meeting. The proposal would make law enforcement against entheogenic substances the city’s low priorities. During the meeting, Richard Skorman, the council’s president stated that he recognized the therapeutic potential of some psychedelics and that his sister-in-law, who had been diagnosed with cancer, was part of a nationally recognized Columbia University study that centered on psilocybin mushrooms. He added that the study had helped her tremendously.
The founder of DNCS, Anthony Caballero told the council while describing his proposal that the resolution would be beneficial, not only to the city because of the strong military community it possesses but also to the veteran population, many of whom suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. He added that this proposal could pave the way for the decriminalization of fungi and plants that would help the veterans suffering from PTSD as well as those who suffered from anxiety.
A military veteran who had served as a combat medic, Zachary Short, stated that since he started self-administering psilocybin, his PTSD symptoms had declined dramatically. He added that the threat to imprison any and all, including veteran service women and men, who used entheogenic plants, which are natural, would be doing them a great disservice. This, he said, was because these plants could very well save their lives and this community was owed the best treatment and care available.
While it’s not certain whether a sponsor on the Council will formally introduce the decriminalization measure, entheogenic substance advocates remain optimistic.
The city council hearing comes a month after the Ann Arbor Michigan city council approved the decriminalization of entheogenic substances. This is the 3rd city in America to enact this change in policy with the first being Oakland and Santa Cruz being second.
In July, activists in Oakland released a proposed measure that would allow residents to use various entheogenic substances in plant medicine healing ceremonies if passed. In August, they revealed guidelines for effectively and safely taking part in those ceremonies.
The psychedelics reform movement has grown nationwide, especially after Denver became the first city in America to decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms through a voter initiative in 2019.
Additionally, activists from Washington DC have qualified a psychedelics decriminalization measure for the 2020 November ballot. Recent polls show that the support for change in policy is strong.
The spike in interest in psychedelics isn’t only seen within the population. Many companies have also come up to develop different products containing psychedelic substances.
