Did You Celebrate 9/20? A Peek into the Psychedelic Mushrooms Holiday

Each year, millions of stoners around the world celebrate 4/20, which is the international marijuana holiday and also 4/19, also known as Bicycle Day; which is the anniversary of the day Albert Hoffman, a chemist, intentionally took LSD then rode his bike through Basel in Switzerland. Unlike 4/19 which was established in 1943 and 4/20 which was established in the 1970s, September 20 is fairly new in the holiday scene.

In 2015, Nicholas Reville, who is a mushroom advocate from Providence in Rhode Island, christened September 20 an educational day of action. This is aimed at encouraging more discussions around the many benefits that psilocybin, a psychoactive compound found in psychedelic mushrooms, possesses.

This day, which was inspired by 4/20, is a day that enthusiasts and activists come together to discuss policy reform and sometimes, indulge in the medicine itself. Reville admitted to an online magazine that the day 9/20 was chosen as it’s when the mushrooms are most abundant, as it is close to the equinox, and also because the day occurs at the start of autumn.

Psilocybin is yet to be declared legal by the U.S. federal government. However, psilocybin when used in psychotherapy and in its synthetic form is on the fast track to becoming a prescription medication for treatment-resistant depression as well as major depressive disorder in the near future. For now, both cannabis and psilocybin are still considered to be Schedule 1 drugs by the Drug Enforcement Agency.

The future shows promise though. Early last year in May, voters from Denver decriminalized personal possession of psilocybin at the ballot box. Then a month later, the city council of Oakland, with a considerable amount of help and advocacy from Decriminalize Nature, decriminalized all naturally-occurring psychedelics, including psilocybin mushrooms.

In January of this year, the City Council of Santa Cruz in California helped pass a similar measure. Additionally, voters in Washington D.C. will in November be deciding their own Decriminalize Nature initiative. The measure, if passed, would classify all psychedelics that occur naturally as the lowest priority for law enforcement.

Over in Oregon, citizens will be voting on 2 separate measures; PSI 2020, an initiative that would legalize psilocybin, particularly for use in therapy, and another separate measure to decriminalize personal possession amounts of all drugs, ranging from mushrooms to heroin.

Psilocybin, as discovered by researchers, possesses many benefits, some of which may help treat an array of mental health ailments ranging from depression to anxiety to eating disorders. The psychedelic substance shows a lot of promise and despite the lack of growth in the industry today, it is expected that the industry will grow in the near future as more and more states legalize its use and other bodies such as Decriminalize Nature call for complete decriminalization and legalization all round. Companies like Cybin Corp. would gladly toast to that future.
