Discovering Yourself Through Altered States

Hypnosis, meditation, dream stages, trance, ecstasies and hallucination are some of the altered states of consciousness. Altered states of consciousness have been a part of human cultures and in existence for practically eons. They refer to a mental state an individual can find themselves in while in a conscious state.

There are many ways one can induce altered states, such as:

  • Hypnosis
  • Prolonged deep meditation
  • Ingestion of a mind-altering substance or psychedelic

Additionally, they can also occur through childbirth, breath work, dance, chanting, during a yoga class or in a floating tank.

While altered states can be pleasurable, inner journeys are sometimes painful and incredibly difficult to undergo, especially in an altered state.

Despite the inadequate research on why and how altered states can be healing, a lot of research is currently being done by various groups and organizations to prove their efficacy.

Apart from their use as therapeutic treatments for various mental disorders, which was given an extra push by the psychedelic research done for ailments such as addiction, PTSD and depression, these states can help remedy physical ailments as well. This especially applies to individuals who feel that conventional methods were not helpful.

Through altered states, the default mode network (“DMN”) activity of an individual’s significantly decreases. The DMN is connected to our social thinking, thoughts on the future or the past and also to an individual’s awareness.

Decrease in the DMN’s activity allows one to bring down the barriers of what their ego may be preventing them from working through. This may help in processing any emotions or memories that may be the root cause of a disorder. The insight that one receives during this period may help them understand themselves better, which brings forth an empowering realization of self.

This is when the healing begins.

From a scientific standpoint, this is what happens in your brain when you are in an altered state:

  1. Your brain slows down from alert consciousness to a relaxed state
  2. Your brain releases dopamine and norepinephrine, which increases your focus and activates one’s pattern recognition. This assists in finding links between information
  3. Some parts of your pre-frontal cortex shut down, which may lead to an individual experiencing timelessness, selflessness and effortlessness
  4. Your brain may release anandamide and endorphins, which boost lateral thinking and reduce pain
  5. Sometimes, your brain may slow down further to theta waves, which encourages meditation and deep relaxation and also enables deep intuitive thoughts
  6. You may also experience an afterglow of oxytocin and serotonin, which bring feelings of peace, happiness and trust

As we can see above, there are many benefits to altered states. However, one should not take this journey lightly. It requires a lot of mental and sometimes, physical strength to extensively deal with your issues, so if you would like to get high and chill, I suggest meditating on a joint. But if you would like to explore your inner self and learn more about yourself and deal with your problem causing emotions and thoughts, then this is for you.

It wouldn’t be surprising if psychedelics companies like Pure Extract Technologies Inc. are doing lots of research on how entheogenic substances can facilitate altered states.
