Former Congresswoman Backs the Use of Psilocybin in Treating Alcohol Use Disorder

Former Congresswoman Mimi Walters (R) has been proclaiming the therapeutic benefits of psychedelic substances. In a recent interview, Walters revealed that somebody close to her family had been struggling to overcome alcohol use disorder while she talked about a legislation that would legalize the possession of various psychedelics.

The former Republican congresswoman, who left Congress in 2019, explained that the close family friend had been able to recover from the disorder with the help of psilocybin after participating in a study conducted at New York University.

Various studies have shown that some psychedelics may be effective in treating conditions such as PTSD, severe depression and addiction. The attention of the media on these studies is among the reasons why Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, believes the United States is seeing an increase in the use of psychedelic substances by young people.

Last year, voters in the state of Oregon approved a measure to legalize psilocybin for therapeutic use. A state panel tasked with giving recommendations on how to implement a legal psilocybin therapy program has authorized a team of researchers to produce a report on the culture, history and science of psilocybin as regulators work towards licensing facilities to administer the psychedelic.

In California, Senator Scott Wiener is sponsoring an initiative that would broadly remove the criminal penalties imposed on the possession of psychedelics, including MDMA, LSD, ibogaine, DMT and psilocybin mushrooms, for individuals aged 21 and above. The measure was approved by two committees of the state assembly as well as the senate before it was pulled by Wiener in order to give it time to garner more support from legislators. The senator plans to reintroduce the measure during next year’s legislative session.

During a psychedelics policy forum held earlier this month, Wiener stated that it took compromise both externally and internally to advance the initiative, noting that the legalization of psychedelic possession was the first step toward decriminalizing all illicit substances and ending the war on drugs.

Psychedelic activists in the state have also filed a petition for the 2022 ballot to make California the first state in the country to legalize magic mushrooms for any and all uses. A fiscal analysis of the measure discovered that doing so would generate local and state tax revenue as well as save California millions in enforcement costs. Advocates have begun to collect signatures, having already been issued with a ballot title and summary by the state attorney general.

Psychedelic-related research has advanced to such an extent that companies such as Delic Holdings Inc. (CSE: DELC) (OTCQB: DELCF) are studying how compounds such as psilocybin can be vaporized as a medicine.
