Neo is offered a red pill by Morpheus in the first film, which many have long been considered to be a metaphor for a guided, consciousness-expanding psychedelic journey. Morpheus urges the young hacker to free his mind using the pill so that he can join him on a guided flashback and hallucination-filled healing journey. In the end, the hacker does choose the pill and begins his psychedelic journey.
Lots of mirrors
Additionally, mirrors serve as portals that can be used to enter different realities as well as play the role of doorways that help red-pilled humans escape the Matrix. This is in addition to providing Trinity and Neo peeks of their twisted reflections, which is similar to what psychedelics do.
The connection between psychedelics and mirrors has many sides. For instance, while they scare characters who gaze into them in the literal sense, they also exist to ferry an individual’s consciousness from one reality to another in the symbolic sense, similar to these plant medicines.
In the film, we also see some references to Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland.” These references begin with Neo’s therapist, who owns a Ceshire-esque cat, and Bugs, Neo’s resistance ally, who has a white rabbit tattoo. Neo’s coworker is also seen reading “Through the Looking-Glass” by Lewis Carroll.
There are some who believe that “Alice in Wonderland” is about a bad trip, particularly because of the mushroom eating and potion drinking we see, which is how psychedelics are consumed.
