Governor of Oregon Appoints Advisory Board to Begin Psilocybin Mushroom Therapy Regulation

In last month’s election, Oregon became the first U.S. state to legalize psychedelic mushroom use for various therapy purposes. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown is now implementing measures to kick off the program by accepting applications for board members. The board’s role will be to work out the process for regulating psychedelic treatment access.

The Oregon Health Authority issued a notice last week that specified the criteria required for those who would like to apply for positions on the board. The board will consist of 14 to 16 members, and representatives of state departments such as the Department of Justice, public health experts, scientific researchers, psychologists and physicians can apply.

In addition to this, Indian tribe representatives and even individual community members who have experience in the fields of psilocybin harm reduction, psychopharmacology, mycology or ethnobotany are encouraged to submit their applications.

The Psilocybin Advisory Board of Oregon also plans to study the scientific research and studies on the effectiveness and safety of the use of psilocybin in managing mental illnesses. Measure 109 allows grown-ups in a clinical setting to access psilocybin mushrooms as well as requires that the aforementioned board be established. The measure does not cite any limitations that may bar a patient from accessing the treatment.

The Oregon Health Authority has been given two years to formulate rules that will be used to govern the program. The initiative states that the advisory board to be established will put together and present its findings, after which the state’s health authority will look into and report the findings publicly.

The board will also be in charge of creating strategic plans for the long term that ensure psilocybin services will be affordable, accessible and safe as a therapy option in the state for adults over the age of 21 who may need psilocybin therapy.

The manager of Measure 109’s ballot campaign, Sam Chapman, stated in an interview that this was the beginning of a two-year operation that would ensure that the state develops an equitable, effective and safe program for psilocybin therapy. The program, he said, would work to make sure the needs of the general public, inclusive of those who suffer from anxiety and depression, were addressed.

Individuals who may be interested in serving on Oregon’s Psilocybin Advisory Board are required to attach their resumes in addition to a statement of interest to forms that can be accessed on the governor’s website by Jan. 1, 2021.

Aside from the psilocybin reform initiative, Oregonians also passed a proposal that decriminalized the possession of all illicit drugs.
