How Retired Pro Athletes Use Psychedelics

Former UFC fighters Dean Lister and Ian McCall, former NHL player Daniel Carcillo and former NFL player Kerry Rhodes are a few well-known athletes who current using plant medicines such as psilocybin mushrooms and ayahuasca to help manage brain trauma symptoms and heal their PTSD.

Carcillo suffered from mental and physical trauma following the effects of repeated concussions after retiring from the NHL. It wouldn’t have been easy to spot though, given that from the outside, he seemed to have it all — from a successful career to a comfortable home and a lovely family.

CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, presents in many ways, with one of the symptoms being depression. The brain condition has been linked to repeated blows to an individual’s head. Other symptoms include erratic behavior, confusion, personality changes and memory loss. While a definitive diagnosis can only be made when an autopsy is conducted, results from a study conducted in 2017 show that chronic trauma encephalopathy was discovered in 91% of college football athletes and 99% of former NFL players who were studied.

Throughout his professional hockey career that spanned more than a decade, Carcillo was diagnosed with seven concussions. He decided to try ayahuasca after various SSRIs and psychotherapy hadn’t helped. Ayahuasca contains DMT, a psychedelic compound that is regarded as a powerful medicine by the indigenous cultures of South America who brew it. Following his ayahuasca ceremony months later, Carcillo explained that his insomnia, memory issues, headaches, slurred speech and head-pressure symptoms had completely disappeared, adding that he was experiencing little to no anxiety or depression.

Rhodes recounts his experience, which is similar to that of Carcillo, noting that his experience with psychedelics brought back his memory, completely eliminated his pain and headaches, and helped him deal with his CTE fear, which caused great improvements in the quality of his life.

McCall, on the other hand, who had fought in professional MMA leagues and the UFC for a decade and a half, had suffered injuries multiple times, which left him with a serious opiate addiction. He explained that his experimentation with psychedelics helped cure him of his suicidal thoughts as well as his addiction.

The experiences of these athletes coupled with already existing clinical research on psychedelics show that psychedelic drugs can, in fact. help treat many conditions, ranging from PTSD to anxiety, depression to addiction, which in the end could provide relief to many individuals suffering from these conditions.
