Mike Tyson Asserts That Psilocybin Helped Change His Life

Towards the end of last year, Mike Tyson took on Ray Jones Jr. in a boxing match for the first time in more than a decade. In a pay-per-view exhibition, the two boxed, ending the eight-round fight 78 to 74 for Tyson.

During an interview with Reuters, Mike Tyson, commonly known as Iron Mike, revealed that he had struggled with drug addiction in his life, asserting that the use of psilocybin helped him get back on his feet. He explained that once he was introduced to psilocybin mushrooms, his whole life changed, adding that the shrooms had helped him when he was suicidal. He asserted that psychedelics were amazing as therapeutics and noted that people should look at them from that perspective.

In the interview, Tyson revealed that he wanted to share his experience with the world, having recently joined a life sciences firm known as Wesana Health to help spread the message on psychedelics and their healing potential.

Wesana Health was founded by Daniel Carcillo, a former NHL player. Similar to Tyson, Carcillo had struggled with suicidal ideation and depression after he retired from hockey. However, after a psilocybin therapy session with Riley Cote, who is  also a former NHL player, Carcillo stated that his life changed. In an interview conducted last year with the GrowthOp, Carcillo explained that Riley had helped save his life.

Earlier in May, Wesana announced that it would be conducting a clinical research project in collaboration with the World Boxing Council to discover new treatments for traumatic brain injuries. The project will also entail further study of the company’s psilocybin formulation dubbed Sana0013, which may be a possible treatment for traumatic brain injuries.

During his career in the NHL as an enforcer, Carcillo experienced many concussions, seven of which were diagnosed. In the interview, he asserted that psilocybin had cured him of traumatic brain injury and its associated symptoms. He explained that after his therapeutic sessions with psilocybin, he no longer suffered from suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, impulse control issues, insomnia, head pressure, headaches or slurred speech.

Tyson, who has also seen improvements in his overall health after undergoing therapeutic sessions with magic mushrooms, believes that stories such as his and Carcillo’s should be shared. While concluding his interview with Reuters, Tyson noted that he believed psychedelics were good for the world, adding that instead of conducting small ceremonies, which made the substances’ access very limited, they needed to be made accessible to everyone.

Personal testimonies aside, rigorous research is being done by a number of companies, including Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF); that research is aimed at developing functional as well as medicinal products from psychedelics.
