Oregon Psilocybin Ballot Initiative Can Help Dying Patients Find Peace, Doctor Says in Campaign Advert

In a new TV ad, a medical doctor states that Oregon’s measure to legalize psilocybin therapy has the potential to help alleviate the mental suffering that people who are terminally ill go through. In the short ad, Dr. Nick Gideonse explains that having worked in hospice care for almost three decades, he believes that when people are dying, their pain — whether it is mental or physical — should be treated.

Gideonse added that mental suffering often accompanies a terminal prognosis. This is why he supports Measure 109, which allows psilocybin therapy for people who are terminally ill and going through depression. The decision is humane, he says, in addition to the measure also helping individuals who are near their death to accept their diagnosis and find peace.

If Measure 109 is approved by the voters of Oregon this week, adults would be able to obtain psychedelics in an environment that is medically supervised. Additionally, Measure 109 does not highlight any limitations concerning the types of conditions that make an individual eligible for the treatment.

An ad that was recently released by the Measure 109 campaign featured a medical doctor who is also a state senator. The ad stated Measure 109 promoted safety for a therapy that can help individuals who are suffering. This was followed up by an on air endorsement by the Heroic Hearts Project, which is a not-for-profit that advocates for ayahuasca therapy for military veterans to fight against PTSD. While the group did not mention the ballot measure in its entirety, it did proclaim the benefits of psilocybin therapy. In addition, another campaign recently entered the space, which is also working in support of a separate measure to decriminalize drug possession and expand substance misuse treatment.

Both measures were formally endorsed by the Oregon Democratic Party last month. However, the psychedelic reform measure is drawing opposition from a rather unlikely source. A nonprofit that hasled efforts to approve local policies that decrease criminal enforcement against psilocybin as well as other entheogens, Decriminalize Nature, asserts that the measure may endanger equitable access to the psychedelic substance.

In January, Rep. Earl Blumenauer mentioned in an interview that not only was he all for the psilocybin reform proposal, but he would also be working to boost the campaign as the election drew near. He then wrote in an email blast in August that passing the measure was necessary because it tackled mental health, which is an important issue in the community, and it so in both a responsible and innovative way.

Pure Extracts Technologies Inc. is an interesting company you should watch in the psychedelics space. The company specializes in extracting plant compounds, especially in the marijuana industry. It has recently added a functional and therapeutic mushroom vertical to its offerings.
