Psychedelic Expert Thinks Legalizing Psychedelic Medicine May Put End to Persecution, Incarceration of Minorities

For many centuries now, psychedelics have been used by various communities and groups. Many doubt that there’s a human society in recorded history that hasn’t used psychedelics to experiment with altered states of consciousness.

It is well known that psychedelics have been used by various indigenous groups of the Americas and are regarded as sacred plants. The plants have been used to explain the myths regarding the existence of humans on earth, teach younger generations, develop socializations and guide cultures.

However, the use of psychedelics isn’t exclusive to indigenous groups, as records show that ancient Greeks also used the natural compounds. This information can be found in the mysteries of Elysian Fields. Many speculate that Christians also utilized psychedelics for similar purposes.

In addition to this, there is evidence of the use of marijuana in China, which is more than 10,000 years old, with archaeological evidence also proving the use of peyote, which is a hallucinogenic extracted from the peyote cactus that contains mescaline.

The executive director of the Chacruna Institute, Bia Labate, who is also the culture and public education specialist at MAPS, notes that the failure of the war on drugs in the United States, coupled with the cultural and historical foundations of the use of psychedelic substances, should be used as a basis for psychedelic medicine legalization.

During a debate that focused on psychedelic legalization around the country, Labate examined how these substances could be used in medical treatment.

With regard to the drug war in the U.S., she noted that the current classification of drugs wasn’t based off of scientific research and was instead based off of social, cultural and historical reasons that have led to the substances being classified into various categories.

During the debate, Labate stated that the war on drugs was a cultural and moral war, as well as a racist war, which mainly affected minorities. The war, she continued, persecuted minorities and associated them with different substances. For instance, she noted, African Americans have been associated with crack cocaine, Mexicans with marijuana and the Chinese with opium. She added that in comparison with their white peers, Brown and Black individuals in the U.S. were incarcerated almost three times as much.

Furthermore, she added, the war on drugs distracted from more important societal issues such as health conditions, housing and education. Given the examples of other nations across the globe that have successfully legalized psychedelics without any issues arising as a result, such as Brazil, there is no reason why psychedelics shouldn’t be legalized, she asserted.

With companies such as XPhyto Therapeutics Corp. (CSE: XPHY) (OTCQB: XPHYF) (FSE: 4XT) devoting an entire division to investing in the development of therapeutic psychedelic formulations, it is likely that laws surrounding these substances will gradually ease.
