Study Links Use of Classic Psychedelics to Positive Behaviors

Psychedelics have been getting an inordinate amount of media attention in recent years due to their medical potential. Although federal law forbids the production, sale and use of psychedelics, loosening policies have allowed researchers to conduct more research on hallucinogenic drugs such as psilocybin and MDMA.

Initial research has revealed that these and other psychedelics may be able to alleviate symptoms of moderate to severe mental health disorders when paired with psychotherapy. As such, lawmakers in several states and even other nations such as Australia are working to loosen the restrictions on psychedelics and allow more research.

A study that was recently published in the “Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology”  journal has revealed that the use of classic psychedelic drugs may be linked to the development of some positive behaviors.

Classic psychedelics are hallucinogens known to trigger psychedelic experiences. These substances include DMT, ayahuasca, LSD, peyote, mescaline, psilocybin and San Pedro. The online survey found that American adults who reported using such psychedelics ate healthier diets and smoked tobacco cigarettes less often. In addition, although the study did not specifically focus on the effect of classic psychedelics on mental disorders, previous studies have found that they have the potential to alleviate the symptoms of certain mental health conditions.

Furthermore, some studies have discovered an association between psychedelics and improved physical health. One study found that people who used psychedelics were less likely to be overweight or obese and had lower odds of developing diabetes, hypertension or heart disease.

In the recent study, researchers looked at the link between psychedelics experiences, profound psychological insights that participants had during their experiences and the health outcomes arising from their experiences. The investigators, who were led by study author Otto Simonsson, reviewed data from an online survey of 2,822 U.S. adults. The pool of study participants closely resembled the composition of America’s population in terms of sex, age and ethnicity.

Those participants who reported using psychedelic drugs also completed an assessment of the insights they had due to psychedelic use.

Investigators found that lifetime use of classic psychedelics was more common in men compared to women and had a modest association with healthier diet-related and tobacco-related behavior.

This means that individuals who reported using classic psychedelics at least once in their lives ate healthier and smoked less tobacco compared to people who had never used psychedelics. They also exercised more, drank less alcohol and were less likely to be overweight or obese.

In their conclusion, the researchers stated that their findings indicated the psychological insights experienced during a classic psychedelic trip may result in positive changes in health behavior and improved physical health, especially in regards to health management.
