Voters in Key Jurisdictions Now Have Chance to Vote on Psychedelics

As psychedelics go mainstream and more states look into decriminalization, it appears fairly certain that these substances will be legalized in the near future. And with the many benefits they provide therapeutically, we may see an increase in the number of alternative psychedelic treatments for various ailments over the next few years. The FDA has granted both psilocybin and MDMA breakthrough therapy status, which will help expedite their legalization for use as mental health medications for mental disorders.

As a result of this expectation, concerns are being raised about how psychedelics will become legal. With organizations such as Decriminalize Nature calling for psychedelics reform in various states across the country, we will soon find out how.

In November, voters from the Washington, DC, and Oregon will be given the chance to pass measures at the ballot box that could establish a foundation for other states in the country. Voters from Oregon will be voting on two memorable measures regarding psychedelic reform, which include the following:

  1. Measure 109: The Oregon Psilocybin Service Initiative, which would legalize psilocybin administration by approved facilitators to anyone over 21 years in the state.
  2. Measure 110: This measure would decriminalize the personal possession of all drugs in the state of Oregon, from LSD and psilocybin to methamphetamine and heroin. If passed, this would make Oregon the first state in the country to decriminalize all drugs.

Voters in Washington, DC,  also have the chance to cast votes to decriminalize natural psychedelic fungi and plants, ranging from mushrooms to ayahuasca. Initiative 81, as it is known, is a police-reform bill that would make the possession of psychedelic fungi and plants a low law enforcement priority.

The initiative is a segment of the larger Decriminalize Nature campaign, which is a repetition of the Decriminalize Nature initiative that was passed last year in California The initiative has also successfully been recreated and passed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Santa Cruz, California.

Decriminalize Nature Oakland activists set a precedent for the decriminalization of all psychedelic fungi and plants. This led to the now nationwide call for decriminalization of psychedelics, with many counties and cities across the country presenting similar measures that cater to their communities’ needs. The DC measure is particularly unique as residents will be voting on the bill rather than city council members.

However, decriminalization may also bring about the notion that psychedelics are better than other drugs, which could result in a lot of stigma. So while states decriminalize psychedelics—or even all drugs in general—they should also establish therapeutic programs that focus on mental health in a positive light as well as educate on drugs and psychedelics while also helping to deal with substance abuse. These efforts will help encourage those struggling with addiction to seek help while at the same time educating communities on the benefits that various psychedelics offer.

Cybin Corp. is an interesting psychedelics company you should watch. This Canada-based company focuses on the functional psychedelics market as well as the pharmaceutical side of psychedelics.
