Microdosing is basically consuming a small dose of a psychedelic substance. The dose is normally 5% to 10% of the normal dose of a psychedelic substance. The microdose is consumed on every third day with two days off between dose days. To prevent habitual use and psychological dependence, users should stop usage at the end a month’s period.
The most popular psychedelics used for microdosing are psilocybin and LSD. Other compounds that can be consumed at microdose levels include ibogaine, DMT, ayahuasca and mescaline. To make each dose consistent, microdosers may grind the dried fungi or plant because potency varies between individual specimens. The dried end product is then weighed and consumed in powder or capsule form. For LSD, people may dissolve a tab of it in alcohol or distilled water to acquire accurate microdoses.
- Decreased stress levels
- Reduction in pain
- Improved social ability
- Reduced anxiety and depression
- Enhanced creativity
- Increased concentration and focus
One survey revealed that 37% of its respondents said the main reason they microdosed was performance enhancement. The survey showed that, when compared to participants who had no experience with microdosing, those who microdosed had lower negative emotions and dysfunctional attitudes in the survey responses. They were found to be more knowledgeable, creative and open minded.
When psilocybin or LSD activates the serotonin system in a person’s brain, a lot can happen. Serotonin is connected to many physiological functions including cognition, mood and stress response. Research has shown that in nonhuman subjects (mice), psychedelic compounds increase the growth of branches of neurons and new synapses and cause neuroplasticity. This may be the underlying cause of the behavioral changes and mood shifts that some microdosers experience.
Given that the field is relatively new and the research is limited, safety should always be a consideration when consuming. A potential concern is that the frequent stimulation of serotonin receptors by psychedelic microdoses in the heart tissue may potentially cause dysfunction of the heart valves.
Furthermore, not all effects that were reported by microdosers are positive. The most common negative effects included migraines or were psychological in nature; most often these occurred on the day the psychedelic microdose was consumed. Some individuals reported that they were unable to sleep or felt anxious and overstimulated. Accidental psychedelic effects may also occur if an individual consumes a higher dose than intended.
