“Let’s Talk about Psychedelics” is a campaign by The Nowak Society, a Colorado-based nonprofit focused on public sensitization on psychedelics. The Nowak Society has been making considerable strides in normalizing the previously nonexistent conversation on psychedelics.
On May 7, 2019, Denver became the first U.S. city to decriminalize the use of psilocybin mushrooms and other plant-based entheogens. This groundbreaking development can partly be attributed to The Society for Psychedelics Outreach Reform and Education (SPORE) having its roots in the city.
Several months later, Oakland and Santa Cruz followed and decriminalized plant-based entheogens. This has led to a nationwide movement of new organizations championing the decriminalization of psychedelics in their cities.
One year after the decriminalization of psychedelics in Denver, The Nowak Society has launched a campaign to engage the public in a discussion on psychedelics as their way of marking this important anniversary. The education campaign dubbed ‘let’s talk about psychedelics’ begins with a community-supported Public Service Announcement named ‘Let’s talk about psilocybin.’
The PSA is followed by host Ryan Foo from the Denver Black Actors’ Guild walking along the 16th street mall asking random members of the public questions about psilocybin. The trivia-like question such as, ‘Who uses psilocybin? Are there any benefits? Does it have any side effects?’ bring to light a lot of perceptions and myths on psychedelics. He respectfully throws in some facts on psychedelics, where necessary.
The campaign is aimed at triggering a much-needed conversation on the use of psychedelics among people who have probably not given much thought to it in the past.’ With ‘let’s talk about psilocybin’, it is evident that a substantial fraction of the society is still clinging onto traditional myths with almost no scientific knowledge on psychedelics.
The Nowak Society is pleased with this development and looks forward to organizing more campaigns on LSD and DMT in the future. It might, however, take a bit more time since The Nowak Society, being a nonprofit organization, solely depends on donations.
Founded in 2017, The Nowak Society believes in public education on facts around psychedelics. They believe psychedelics should be legally available to the public to get their own psychedelic experience, and they emphasize the therapeutic and medicinal benefits of these substances. It is also their firm belief that the recreational use of psychedelic substances is also essential in a journey towards self-discovery.
We are living in a more informed world, and ancient myths on psychedelics are slowly being done away with and being replaced with facts. And facts are what sector players like StemSation hope to give us, along with any products they develop on that journey.
