What Drives People to Use Psychedelic Substances

Hallucinogens are undoubtedly becoming more popular each day the world over. With the decriminalization of psilocybin and other plant-based entheogens in some cities such as Denver and Santa Cruz, one cannot help but wonder, ‘Why do people use psychedelic substances?’ Well, all the hype around psychedelics is not unfounded.

There are many psychedelic substances, from ‘magic’ mushrooms (which contain psilocybin) to Peyote (which contains DMT), to LSD, which all differ in their hallucinogenic intensity. However, they all have one important use, recreation. After a long, dull day of work or when you’re bored, eating some ‘magic’ mushrooms will guarantee you a good time and get your mind off of things for a while.

Psychedelics are also widely used for religious and cultural reasons. Communities such as the Red Indians have been known to use Peyote for religious and social festivals traditionally. This has also been reported in Peru and some other parts of South America.

Another less known use of psychedelics is for artistic inspiration. Due to their ability to alter the mind’s normal operations, psychedelic substances are used by creatives such as writers, musicians, actors, and disk jockeys as a source of inspiration. This has become more apparent with Netflix releasing a special documentary revealing psychedelic experiences of some of America’s biggest celebrities.

Most psychedelics have also proven to have therapeutic effects on users. Matthew Duff, one of the founders of The Society for Psychedelics Outreach Reform and Education (SPORE), recounts how psilocybin mushrooms helped him get through severe mental stress with their therapeutic effects. Many users who started using psychedelics while going through a tough time have generally indicated that the substances helped them confront their issues.

Scientists have also been using psychedelics for research. There are many myths about psychedelic substances. Scientists have been working round the clock to provide facts and either approving or dismissing these myths. One of the significant scientific discoveries has been that most psychedelics are non-addictive and have no known permanent effect on the human brain. This has led to the decriminalization of some psychedelics, such as psilocybin mushrooms in cities like Denver and Oakland.

Research by Johns Hopkins also shows that psychedelics, such as psilocybin, also help in treating alcoholism. In the study, 373 people were interviewed. 83% attested to having used psychedelics and were able to quit drinking. This is not a new concept since the Red Indians used it in the past.

There seems to be so much that we need to know about psychedelics, and there is no wonder that entities like EntheogeniX Biosciences will make helpful contributions to our understanding of these substances.
