States That Have Made Advancements Toward Legalizing Psychedelics

Interest in psychedelics has grown significantly as mainstream acceptance grows and research uncovers more of the benefits that these substances possess, including how they can be used to manage a range of mental health disorders. These positive advancements have even led some states to decriminalize these controlled substances, with other states set to legalize the substances in the near future.

Let’s look at some of the states that may soon legalize psychedelics.

Oregon

In November 2020, the state of Oregon passed a measure that would establish legal psychedelic healing centers where individuals aged 21 and above could undergo psilocybin-assisted therapy.

Since then, the Beaver state has been working on implementing rules to govern these establishments, which may be launched before next year ends.

In addition to this, the state decriminalized the possession of small amounts of any and all illicit substances, psychedelics included.

California

The Golden State is currently debating the SB-519 bill, which would decriminalize the personal use of psychedelics such as DMT, LSD, MDMA and psilocybin. The measure, if passed, would also permit the supported or facilitated use of psychedelics in therapy centers.

The decriminalization of psychedelics in the state of California would be a big step toward putting an end to the drug war in the country.

New Jersey

Last month, the leader of the state’s Senate filed a measure that would legalize the home cultivation, gifting and possession of psilocybin mushrooms for individuals aged 21 and above.

The measure, known as the Psilocybin Behavioral Health Access and Services Act, would also establish a framework that would permit psilocybin therapy centers to operate, with licensed therapists being allowed to administer psilocybin therapy. The bill’s passage would bring the state of New Jersey one step closer to legalizing these therapeutic substances.

Connecticut

Earlier in May, Connecticut’s governor signed a budget measure that includes a provision to establish psychedelic-assisted treatment centers where eligible patients could receive government-funded MDMA or psilocybin-assisted therapy.

This will all be managed by the Connecticut Psychedelic Treatment Advisory Board, which will be set up once the measure is approved. If the program is a success, access to psychedelic therapy and legalization may soon be actualized.

Colorado

Residents in the state of Colorado are set to vote on an initiative that would legalize the personal use of natural psychedelics such as DMT and psilocybin during this year’s midterm elections.

The state also plans to establish psilocybin therapy healing centers where individuals aged 21 and above can receive psychedelic-assisted therapy administered by a trained practitioner. This move opens up treatment to any resident in the state, which if successful may positively influence the state’s stance on current psychedelic classification at the local level.

As more reforms are enacted at state level, established companies such as Delic Holdings Corp. (CSE: DELC) (OTCQB: DELCF) could have more markets within which to set up shop.
